BOWL COMMERCIAL BLITZ

The New Orleans Saints may have won the Super Bowl, but which advertisers got the most bang for their Super Bowl ad bucks is still up for debate. Regulars Doritos, Budweiser and Bud Light might have made the biggest impression based on the sheer number of commercials, but E-Trade's babies continued to kill us with cuteness. Here's a rundown of some of the Super Bowl commercial hits and misses.

  • The controversial Tim Tebow anti-abortion spot, featuring his mother, was completely innocuous. In fact, if you didn't know about the controversy before hand, you might have completely missed it and the message.
  • In an interesting twist, Google made Super Bowl viewers actually read their commercial's touching storyline, which was spelled out in a sequence of web searches.
  • McDonald's remake of their classic Larry Bird-Michael Jordan spot with LeBron James and Dwight Howard was no slam dunk, even with a Bird cameo at the end.
  • Doritos scored a few hits with a cute but tough kid warning a potential suitor to "keep your hands off my mama, keep your hands off my Doritos." A funeral featuring a living man in a casket full of Doritos -- who stuns funeral goers when he and the chips spill out -- also helped keep the between-game action from being a stupor bore.
  • Bud Light's big hit was their apocalyptic spot that had scientists partying like it was the end of the world as we know it. It also revived the theme of their famed "What's up" spot only auto-tuned for the new decade with T-Pain making a cameo. Budweiser scored a few for inventiveness with its human bridge spot. Apparently some people will do anything to get a beer or try to sell you one.
  • Cute critters were a common theme with Monster.com employing a violin-playing beaver; Bridgestone, a killer whale in the flatbed of a truck, and Budweiser going with the calf/bull running with their trademark Clydesdales.
  • Dodge tried to offer their Charger as an anecdote for the beaten-down modern man with a spot that left women wowed by the concept and men wondering if they really need a new car to get their mojo back.
  • Classic rockers also were prominent with KISS shilling Cherry Dr. Pepper to the tune of its "Dr. Love" along with their pint-sized likenesses, Mini KISS. Cheap Trick turned their "Dream Police" into "Green Police" for Audi, and relative newcomers Arcade Fire was heard several times in spots for the N-F-L.
  • Volkswagen had an unlikely hit with their "Punch Dub" spot, which ended with Stevie Wonder hitting a stunned Tracy Morgan.
  • Hollywood also took part in the action using the platform to spread the word on potential blockers Alice in Wonderland, Wolf Man, Prince Of Persia and Robin Hood.
  • Motorola and Go Daddy were betting that sex still sells with bath tub and massage spots, but some might have been wondering exactly what product they were selling.
  • E-Trade's babies didn't disappoint in a new spot in which a two-timing tot was accused of hiding out with a "milkaholic." Another spot with the babies on a plane was also amusing and the company may have scored additional points when Super Bowl hero Drew Brees celebrated the victory with his baby son, who looked like an E-Trade kid, in his arms.
